Favorite TED talk: Dan Pink on the surprising science of motivation

Favorite quote from the talk:

“Intrinsic motivators versus extrinsic motivators. Autonomy, mastery and purpose, versus carrot and sticks. And who wins? Intrinsic motivation, autonomy, mastery and purpose, in a knockout.
What resonated with you about this speaker’s message?
There are thousands of people, in our city, who are working in a job they hate. Why do they stay? Because they get a big paycheck. “I can stick it out for a few more years,” they say. “The money’s just too good!”
Days turn into weeks. Weeks into months. Months into years. Until they retire. Or die. Or both. Working all those years doing something they can’t stand. Tragic. Dan Pink shows what motivates people to do amazing work. Hint? It’s not money.
Where do you go to find inspiration?

Reading. Books, blogs, tweets, magazines, pins. It doesn’t matter. Reading allows the mind to simmer with the subject matter. The downside is that it takes me awhile to finish a book. I usually read with some sort of pen/notebook combo, jotting down notes as they come. Reading with purpose, I suppose.

Do you apply anything you learned from this video to your personal or professional life?
Growing up, my dad always used to tell us to do something that we loved. I think that’s why this video resonates with me so much. When you meet someone who’s living out their passion, as opposed to doing a “job”, you see the difference. I want to be one of those people.
